Massachusetts Cannabis Laws: A Plain-English Guide for Cape Ann Visitors
Every summer, plenty of our customers are visiting Cape Ann from out of state. Adult-use cannabis is legal in Massachusetts, but the rules are specific. Here's a plain-English summary. It's general information, not legal advice; the Cannabis Control Commission has the official details.
Age and ID
You must be 21 or older to buy, carry or use cannabis in Massachusetts. Dispensaries check a valid government-issued photo ID at every visit. Out-of-state IDs and passports are accepted.
How much you can buy and carry
Adults can buy and carry up to one ounce of flower, or up to five grams of concentrate, or the equivalent in other products, at one time. At home, adults may keep up to ten ounces.
Where you can (and can't) consume
Consuming cannabis in public is not allowed in Massachusetts. That includes streets, parks, beaches and parking lots. Use is generally limited to private residences, and many hotels, rentals and landlords prohibit it on their property, so check before you book.
Cannabis and cars
Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal, the same as with alcohol.
Don't consume in a vehicle, whether you're driving or a passenger, moving or parked.
Keep products sealed and out of reach while driving, such as in the trunk or a locked glove compartment.
Leaving the state
Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law, even into another state where it's legal. Plan accordingly before you head home.
Edibles
In Massachusetts, edible servings are limited to 5mg of THC each, with up to 100mg per package. Edibles can take much longer to take effect than other products. Read the label and ask our staff if you have questions.
